Boston Trust Act is adopted.

August 20, 2014

Passed unanimously by the Boston City Council and signed by Mayor Marty Walsh, the ordinance calls for the city to withdraw from participation in the federal Secure Communities program (est. 2006) and makes Boston a so-called “Sanctuary City.” It law prohibits the police and other city departments from cooperating with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency when it comes to detaining immigrants on civil warrants, while still allowing for cooperation in criminal matters. The ordinance is amended in 2019 and reaffirmed in 2024.
